About this event: International Course on Globalisation, Indigenous Peoples

I am looking for information. Please, your opinion and experiences count and they can help us all.

What do YOU think are the most important 'Management Tools and Skills' Young Professionals, who are working or intending to work in International Co-operation (development work), must have..?

hi sahro

this would be a great question to post to the IYPF's networks - i'd be happy to send something around and get them to email you ... and in return get you to write something up about the results!

Local indepth experiences, commitment to the MDGs and not be RACIST!
International cooperation work for ddevelpment could be very demanding and most of the so called young proffessionals, at least those from Africa view international deveopment issues as means to travel out to explore better opportunities. So, they quickly offer themselves as interns, volunteers or whatever opportunities they happen to come across on the net or else where. So, the international agencies that end of hiring or recruiting these cream of "young proffessionals end up recruiting treasure hunters, opportunists and what have you. In the end, the initial objectives for the excercisex are not actually met because those recruited either do not return to their home countries to impact the knowledge they have learnt, or where they do, they merely take pride in showing off their knowledge of foreign land.
In my opinion, for a so called young proffessional to be eligible to be recruited for international development work, he/she must demonstrate a long and sustained interest in the area that he/she intends to go and participate. Here, the young proffessional should be able to give an indepth account of his local experience in the chosen field. What he has done in the past, what were the results, what were the challenges and what are the steps taken or expected to be taken to overcome them. Heshould also give anidea on what it is he/she is doing at the present and give an indepth breakdown of the expected outcome, the benefits to the local community. Once a proffesional isable to demonstrate a sustainedinterest in the chosen area, I believe his/her ideas can be harvested, polished and used to polish his/her international experiences o achieve better results.
Further, the young proffessional should haveideas about themillenium development goals, howhis/her country is working towards achieving them and the benefits he/she thinks are derivable in every part of the globe targeting them. I believe that the MDGs are the minimal levels of development expected all over the world and every one is supposed to work towards theseminimal targets.
Lastly, the young proffessional should not be racist. He/she must demonstrate an ability to tollerate other people from other backgrounds, be able to accomodate others irrespective of race, religion, colour.Must be able to understand diversity of cultures, differences of opinions and must have a TEAM spirit.
